Since it is still February I am going to give my Grandmother one more mention here. Thursday is her birthday and if she were still alive, Grandma Mary would be 97 years young. She had a bit of a hard life being the youngest of 10 and having both her parents die when she was quite young. She had a wicked sense of humor with a dry wit and a sharp tongue. She didn’t share much but you could always tell that she cared. I liked that she was very matter-of-fact but she definitely loved me.
Not that you could tell from looking at me (at almost 5′ 8″) but Grandma Mary was tiny – barely 4′ 10″! She had a pretty bad case of scoliosis that she swore was because she spent so many years as a young woman carrying around terribly heavy trays of food and dishes while she worked at her sister’s restaurant.
As they say, they don’t make many like her anymore. Before she died she told me that since I was the only granddaughter with a February birthday like hers, she would be giving me her amethyst ring. I was touched and tickled to know that I would have a piece of her past.
Well, Grandma Mary passed away before she could give it to me herself. My mother made sure I received it and I think it’s especially precious since not only did it belong to my Grandmother, but her sisters gave it to her for her 21st birthday. I had just turned 23 that year.
What a stunning heirloom! My personal paradise today is this beautiful gift that helps me honor and remember my Grandmother. Love you Grandma Mary!
Do you have a special heirloom or gift that fills your heart with joy? I’d love to hear about it!
Peace and health,
